A Brief History of Luckenbach, Texas
Named for its first resident and founder, Jacob Luckenbach, the town of Luckenbach was reportedly founded by German farmers in 1849 as a trading post.
The post office that still stands today was open until 1971 when the community (by then virtually a ghost town) became unincorporated–today, Luckenbach is no longer officially a town at all.
Luckenbach quickly found new life, though, as a country music venue and destination. Today, the Luckenbach Dance Hall is one of the most legendary venues in Texas, and travelers visit from far and wide to experience the relaxed environment that supports that town’s motto that “everybody is somebody in Luckenbach”.
Among the many, many talented Texas country music artists who have entertained the crowd at Luckenbach are the legendary Willie Nelson, who hosted his famous Fourth of July picnics in Luckenbach from 1995 to 1999.
